1978년은 괜찮은 해였다. 다이아몬드 산업에 뛰어든 젊은이들은 신나는 한 해를 보냈다. 나는 26세였고 다이아몬드는 멋졌다. 7월에, 나는 첫 번째 다이아몬드 가격 리스트를 발행했다. 사람들은 웃었다. 하지만 가격 리스트 6개가 한 부에 25센트에 팔렸다. 그 뒤의 일은 역사라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 개인용 컴퓨터와 인터넷이 상용화되기 훨씬 전인 1978년에 라파포트와 정보 혁명이 다이아몬드 업계에 불어 닥쳤다.

30년이 휙 지나갔다는 것은 믿기 힘든 노릇이다. 현명했던 구세대는 은퇴를 했고 이 자리를 에너지가 넘치는 젊은 세대가 메웠다. 나는 이러한 변화와 도전과 기회를 목격한 중간 세대이다. 우리 세대는 세계 제1차 대전과, 경제 공황과, 붐과, 번영과 가난을 직접 들으며 자랐다. 우리의 경험과 지식은 젊은 세대의 에너지를 극대화한다. 하지만 보는 시각의 다툼 속에서 한 때 우리 것이었던 미래는 이제 그들의 것이 되었다. 이것을 깨닫는 데 30년이 걸렸다.

지난 30년은 변화와 기회의 축하의 장이었다. 정보 혁명의 물결을 만들어 내고 따르는 것은 매우 신나는 일이었다. 하지만 혁명보다 더욱 중요한 것은 우리 업계의 진화였다. 다이아몬드와 주얼리 업계인들은 진정한 영웅들이었다.

다이아몬드 산업은 지난 30년 동안 닥쳐온 모든 도전에 맞섰으며, 이겨냈다. 어떤 도전도 우리는 겪고, 살아내고, 이겨내 왔다. 1970년대 말의 솟구치는 다이아몬드 가격과 심각한 공급 부족, 1980년대 초의 다이아몬드 투기와 투자, 제어력을 잃은 시장의 붕괴, 그 후 생겨난 파산, 감정서 문제, 라파포트 가격표, 다이아몬드의 일반 재화화, 팬시 칼라 다이아몬드의 붐, 태국과 중국으로의 연마 중심 이동, 중동에서 일어난 붐, 독점회사의 다이아몬드 탐사, 순익 감소, 노마진, 인터넷 붐, 소비자에 대한 가격 공개, SOC(서플라이어 오브 초이스), 드비어스의 소매 브랜드 개발, 다운스트림 마케팅, 수직 통합, 브랜드 구축, 커팅 감정, 합성 문제, 처리 문제, 블러드 다이아몬드, 킴벌리 프로세스, 패트리어트 법안, 광산에서 소비자까지의 추적 마케팅, 포에버마크, 두바이, 인도와 중국의 수억에 이르는 새로운 수요층도, 최근에는 미국의 경제 침체, 파산 및 은행 경매 증가, 심각한 세계 경제 불안, 아랍과 러시아의 수요 증가, 물가 상승과 동반한 큰 사이즈 스톤의 가격 상승 등 도전은 계속되어 왔다.

우리는 다이아몬드 및 주얼리 산업에 종사하는 우리 모두가 지난 30년 동안 살아남았을 뿐 아니라 이 시기 동안 발전을 거듭했다는 사실에 큰 위안을 느껴야 할 것이다. 우리와 우리 업계가 우리가 생각한 것 이상으로 강하다는 사실을 인식해야 한다. 우리의 과거로부터 힘과 자신감을 얻어야 한다.

우리는 과거에 빠져 이를 즐기는 것의 위험성을 알아야 한다. 자기만족 속에 안주하게 될 수도 있기 때문이다. 앞으로의 30년은 어떠할 것인가? 30년 후 여러분은, 여러분의 가족은, 여러분의 사업은 어떻게 되어 있을 것인가? 어떤 도전을 이겨내야 할 것인가? 어떤 성취를 이루어낼 것인가? 어떤 기회를 포착할 것인가? 여러분의 사업과, 아이들과, 직원들은 어떤 상황에 놓이게 될 것인가? 설립 기념일은 뒤돌아보기에 좋은 때이다. 우리의 현주소가 어떠하며, 어디에 와 있는지, 어디에서 출발했는지, 어디로 향해 가고 있는지를 살펴볼 수 있는 때이다.

적극적인 전략적 사고와 계획을 수립하기에 좋은 때이다. 우리는 너무 자주 일상적인 활동 반경에 사로잡히곤 한다. 우리는 한발 물러나 현재의 우리가 아닌, 우리가 가야할 바를 다시 한 번 생각해 볼 시간을 가져야 한다. 설립 30주년을 기념하면서 우리는 어렵고 혼란스런 시기를 넘겨 거둬온 성공을 뒤돌아본다. 우리는 미래에 성공을 거둘 수 있기를 기도한다. 이 자리를 빌어, 라파포트의 모든 직원을 대신하여 전세계에 있는 수천 명의 친구들과 후원자들에게 감사를 드린다. 그들은 어려울 때도 힘들 때도 우리 곁을 지켜 주었으며 우리의 노력에 지속적인 후원자가 되어 주었다.

<예술은 사치가 아닌 생물학적 본성>

(서울=연합뉴스) 김지연 기자 = 많은 사람이 예술은 손에 닿지 않는 곳에 있는 것 같다고 느낀다. 미술은 경매에서 어마어마한 돈에 팔리는 작품이고 공연은 비싼 표 값 때문에 큰맘 먹지 않고는 보기 어렵다.

사람들은 예술이 사람의 감정이나 정서, 생각을 표현하는 행위라는 데 대체로 동의하지만, 생산적ㆍ건설적인 행위라거나 인간이 먹고사는 데 필수적인 생존의 방식이라고 생각하지 않는다. 오히려 배부른 사람들이나 누리는 사치품으로 여긴다.

그러나 미국 인류학자 엘렌 디사나야케는 1992년작 '미학적 인간-호모 에스테티쿠스'(예담 펴냄)에서 인간의 예술적 행위는 보편적이고 '생물학적'인 인간의 본성이라고 말한다.

인간이 예술을 갈구하며 산다는 수사학적 표현이 아니라 동물행동학적으로, 다윈의 진화론적으로 살펴봤을 때 인간은 미술과 함께 진화했다는 뜻이다. 이 때문에 시대와 장소를 막론하고 인간이 있는 곳 어디에나 예술이 있다.

저자는 먼저 예술이 생물학적 욕구이며 이를 충족하는 것이 당연한 행위라고 설명한다. 그의 관점에 따르면 예술은 '영혼의 밥'이 되기 이전에 '육체의 밥'이다. 어린이들이 양육자에게 유대감을 보이는 '애착 행동'을 자연스럽게 하는 것처럼, 인간의 성장과 함께 '예술 행동'도 당연히 발달한다.

기가 막힌 미술 작품을 봤을 때나 음악을 들을 때의 아찔한 느낌, 무용수가 번쩍 뛰는 모습을 볼 때나 경이로운 조각상을 손으로 만졌을 때의 형언할 수 없는 느낌은 단순한 기분이 아니라 육체적인 흥분과 쾌감이다.

진화론적 관점에서 비생산적인 것은 도태될 수밖에 없으나 생존과 명확한 인과관계가 없는 것으로 보이는 예술은 인간의 습성에서 전혀 도태되지 않았다.

저자는 이를 '특별화하기(Making Special)'의 욕망이 인간에게 생물학적으로 부여된 선천적인 성향이기 때문이라고 설명한다. 먹을거리를 찾아 헤매야 했던 선사인들도 자신과 부족을 특별화하려는 욕구에 충실했다. 예술은 인간에게 신체적, 감각적, 감정적 만족과 쾌감을 제공하면서 인간을 특별화하기에 끝까지 살아남을 수 있었다.

현대사회에서는 예술을 개인적 충동이나 욕망의 발현으로 보지만, 애초에 인류는 예술을 공공활동으로 번성시켜 왔다. 사회적 동물인 인간이 집단에서 벗어나 살 수 없듯이 예술도 집단에서 숨을 쉬었다. 인간이 인간을 향상시키려는 본능의 산물이 예술이다.

이 책이 이렇게 예술이 인간의 본능이라고 목소리 높여 주장하는 것은 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘을 거쳐 지금에 이른 현대사회가 예술의 본질을 "지워버렸기" 때문이다. 합리적 이성을 바탕으로 한 모더니즘은 예술을 객체나 성질로 여겼고, 해체주의적인 포스터모더니즘은 예술을 텍스트나 일용품으로 봤다.

저자는 이 둘에서 모두 벗어나 예술은 우리의 '종적 특이성', 다시 말해 인간성에 본질적인 것을 인지하라고 촉구한다. 예술은 모든 사회, 모든 계층에 존재하는 보편적인 행위이자 성질이라는 주장이다. 꽤 길고 학술적인 분석을 내놓던 저자는 끝에서 솔직한 한 마디로 이 책의 논지를 정리한다.

"지금까지 길고 복잡한 본문은 간단한 결론, 즉 말하기, 일하기, 운동, 유희, 사회화, 학습, 사랑, 보살핌 같은 인간의 공통적이고 보편적인 행위와 관심사들처럼 '예술도 모든 사람이 인식하고, 장려하고, 개발해야 할 인간의 정상적이고 필연적인 행동'이라는 결론을 이끌어내기 위한 것이었다."
